The Siemens SGT-A65 (formerly Industrial Trent 60) is a 50-55 MW three-shaft, axial flow, aeroderivative industrial 50/60 Hz gas turbine based on the Rolls-Royce Trent 800 high-bypass turbofan aircraft engine developed for the Boeing 777. The Rolls-Royce MT30 is a 36-40 MW marine gas turbine engine. The MT30 is used on U.S. Navy DDG 1000 Zumwalt Class destroyers and Freedom Class Littoral Combat Ships (LCS).
Utility and industrial power generation in 50/60-Hz markets, including combined-cycle and cogeneration installations. SGT-A65 TR machines have officially been used in mechanical load drive duty (gas boost duty) since 2006. Marine applications (Rolls-Royce MT30) include military surface vessels and large commercial cargo vessels.
The MT30 and Industrial Trent (now SGT-A65 TR) was privately developed by Rolls-Royce, and development was sponsored in part by the government of Canada and the province of Quebec. Further SGT-A65 TR development is funded by Siemens.
In production.
At least 124 SGT-A65 TR machines have been manufactured and installed. At the beginning of 2019, 21 MT30 marine gas turbines had been manufactured.
In the electrical genset arena, the SGT-A65 TR faces competition from the LM6000 and LM9000. In the mechanical drive arena, the SGT-A65 TR competes with the GE LM6000PC Sprint. The primary competition facing the MT30 is the GE LM2500+ and the Zorya-Mashproekt UGT-25000.
A healthy SGT-A65 TR order book is a certainty, especially for power generation and mechanical drive applications. Sales of Type 26 frigates make the MT30 a serious market contender. The Canadian frigate program will probably retain MT30 and the Japanese frigate program adds extra sales. Brexit may limit the MT30's access to the European market.
