About the GE MS9001 (Frame 9 / Model 9000):

The General Electric MS9001 (Frame 9 / Model 9000) is a heavy-duty, single-shaft, axial-flow, industrial gas turbine for 50 Hz operation, with power ratings up to 256 MW in simple-cycle duty and up to 520 MW in combined-cycle duty. Combined-cycle packages of up to 825 MW are currently advertised.

Application:

Baseload electrical power generation, including simple-cycle, combined-cycle, and cogeneration installations. MS9001 machines can be equipped with GE's dry low NOx (DLN) combustion system. The MS9001E gas turbine machine has also been ordered for peaking duty.

Sponsor:

The MS9001 was privately developed by General Electric.

Status:

Other than the MS9001EC, the MS9001 models identified are either currently in production or expected to enter production in the next few years. GE is not actively promoting the 9EC.

Total Produced:

A total of 1,256 MS9001 machines of various types have been manufactured and installed for customers in 60 countries.

Competition:

With a simple-cycle output of 132 MW upward, the MS9001 competes against machines from Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (Model 501/701 series), and Siemens (SGT5-2000/3000/4000 series).

Outlook:

1) Blade oxidation problems with 9HA.01 have been addressed and are likely to be of only short-term importance; 2) Efficiency of 9HA family likely to draw more success; 3) GE addressing onerous market conditions by increasing emphasis on support and maintenance; and 4) Upgrading generating plants to combined cycle becoming increasingly important.
